Gaming

Some organizations consider gaming (otherwise known as gambling) activities to serve as fundraisers. Some common gaming events for nonprofits include bingo, lottery giveaways, 50/50 raffles, and casino nights. While gaming activities are often fun, funds raised through gambling can be taxable as unrelated business income by the IRS. Because the IRS does not consider gaming activities charitable, improper reporting can risk an organization’s tax-exempt status. Additionally, many states require organizations to apply for a gaming license before conducting any gaming-related activities. When considering gaming as a fundraising option, it is imperative to ensure all the necessary permits are acquired.
